Non fiction graphic organizers and writing according to Teachers College

We read non fiction books with a partner.  We discussed the book with each other.  We drew our own graphic organizer and filled it in.  We took the words from our  organizers and wrote a non fiction report.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM THE FIRST GRADE!

Pine cone experiment

We gathered pine cones from the yard. We brought the pine cones back into the classroom.  We made observations about the cones and took a seed from the cone and observed it.
 
We decided to put the open pine cones into water to see what they would do overnight.  We made the prediction that they would sink. Some of the girls decided they would shrink.  Can you guess who was right?

GRADE ONE

We began our day with a prayer .  The girls were wonderful!  We accomplished a lot today. The  girls labeled their  books and  folders with some direction .  The girls discussed how they could "BEE" with one another and people that they meet.  We also discussed what bullying is and how to handle it.  The girls learned how to conduct themselves in the classroomand hallway. They were great.

TREBUCHET

Here are the girls showing how to work a trebouchet.  Sofia explained how she built it. Then  we took turns launching it

Magnet tiles

We used our imaginations to create buildings using  magnet tiles.  We discovered through trial and error. Look  at what we did!

The girls have been working on comic books with their partners.  Absolutely amazing all the stories they have written!  Enjoy the pictures.

Cecropia Moths

Please look at the picture of the plastic bag below.  Sofia brought in this cocoon because it hadn't hatched.  She contributed it to our science center.  Well  imagine our surprise when it hatched inside the plastic bag!  We transferred it to our butterfly cage and watched it for two  days.  Here are some of the release pictures from today.  ENJOY!

BUTTERFLIES AND LUNA MOTHS

WE HAVE BEEN WATCHING OUR BUTTERFLIES FROM CATERPILLAR TO CHRYSALIS TO PAINTED LADY BUTTERFLIES!
WE ALSO HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO HAVE LUNA MOTHS THIS YEAR.  THEIR COCOON LOOKS LIKE ROLLED UP LEAVES,  YOU HAVE TO KEEP THEM WET.  WHEN THEY HATCH THEY ONLY LIVE SIX MORE DAYS.  NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE RELEASED THEM ASAP!
